Proofreading/Copy Editing: This is a general read-through for punctuation, grammar, word usage, verb tense, characterization and character voice continuity. This is also a review of the timeline of events for consistency and clarity. Word choice is examined for clarity of meaning.
Line Editing: Line editing involves looking closely at the structure of each sentence, checking for word usage, clarity, and stylistic choices. This is where repeated words, clichés, and overused phrases get found and suggestions made for how to improve clarity for the reader while maintaining the feel of the characters and events. Sometimes a suggestion will be made to move a particular paragraph or piece of information in the interests of clarity or flow of the story.
Series Bible: This can be arranged for by the single book, with the remainder of the series being arranged for later on. You will receive a spreadsheet made using Microsoft Excel, with individual pages for each item you want to track, such as Characters, Places, Ships, Alien Races, or Other definitions specific to your work. This can also be provided in other formats when necessary.
Developmental Editing: This is a reading and evaluation of your manuscript for big picture items like pacing, timing of events, plot, character development, setting, and continuity. You will receive an Editorial Letter outlining any issues, along with notes in the manuscript for specific examples and suggested changes.
Beta Reading: This is a fresh set of eyes on your manuscript for feedback and overall impressions. I focus on things like plot, character development, and any inconsistencies in the story. This is a much lighter pass than a copy edit or a developmental edit. If I get into the manuscript and find it needs more work the fees for the Beta read can be applied to the more intensive services.
Timeline Building: This is a general read-through that will yield a basic timeline of who did what, when and where. You will receive a document in Microsoft Word unless you have specific requests for other formats.
Note: All suggestions are made using the Track Changes feature of Microsoft Word. Letters and other formal feedback will be in Word document format and Timelines or Series Bibles will be discussed as to the most useful format for your needs. Pricing varies, so please contact me for customized quotes.
